Our 5 most frequently asked menstrual cup questions

The Lunette team really do like receiving your questions, comments and concerns- YES, even the really “unique” ones! We understand that menstrual cup use doesn’t come easy to everyone and a few questions might arise regarding your anatomy and how the cup works.- We want to help you love your Lunette menstrual cup just as much as we do!

How are menstrual cups different than Tampons?

The Lunette menstrual cup is made of medical grade silicone…not cotton or rayon- which can dry you out. Plus, the Lunette cup’s capacity is much greater than tampon’s. The Lunette model 2 can hold (30ml) 1 fl oz of liquid compared to a super absorbency tampon which can hold only 12-15 grams. We have more menstrual cup and tampon comparisons here.

HELP! Why can’t get my menstrual cup inserted comfortably?

You may not be able to get the menstrual cup to fit right the first time, but with a bit of practice you will be able to insert the cup like an expert. Check out these folding methods here. Every body is different so if one fold doesn’t work well for you try another one! You also don’t need to wait for your period to start before you can try out your menstrual cup- it’s perfectly OK to do a “dry-run”- especially since the Lunette cup wont dry you out. Check out more useful tips for insertion here.

Why am I having difficulties removing my cup?

Relax. The first few times using the cup you may feel that removing your cup is a complicated process. After a few tries you’ll realize that it can actually be quick and simple! Break the seal by squeezing the bottom part of the cup until you feel or hear the suction release. Then, gently rock the cup from side to side while pulling down. Make sure that you do not pull the cup out by the tab alone! Our website has some good tips for the removal of the Lunette menstrual cup.

How do I clean my menstrual cup?

The Lunette cup should be cleaned before and after your cycle and after emptying. We suggest boiling your menstrual cup for 5 minutes. If this is not a good option for you (say, while you’re out shopping or camping) wipe your cup out with toilet paper or use a Lunette disinfecting wipe.

Are colored cups safe?

Yes. The dye used in Lunette menstrual cups is FDA approved for medical and food use. The colors don’t contain heavy metals or phthalates. We don’t use really bright colors or glitter in our products- we choose our colors very carefully so they are truly safe to use inside the vagina. Plus the type of dye used in the Lunette menstrual cups are inside the silicone so it’s not possible for the color to leach like with some cheaper dyes which are also used in other menstrual cups.

I have a tip for cleaning the suction holes. Fill the cup with warm, soapy, water. Then cover the opening with your hand and flip the cup upside down. Next, gently plunge (like plunging a toilet) the cup. Water should shoot out the holes and help clean them in the process.

wow! how neat would it be to win this! I’d love to be able to save money and avoid yest infection, bladder infectins ect with using tampons and pads! im sick of that! and the gross feeling of sitting in a full pad! ew!

  • Anonymous

I really want to try the lunette cup! I would love to get rid of tampons/pads.

  • Samantha Simmons

I first started using cups a few months ago, but started off with a different cup brand. I was instantly sold on the idea of eco-friendliness and saying goodbye to bulky pads.

Unfortunately, after purchasing the cup, I knew after two cycles that I didn’t do enough brand research and that the cup and I weren’t going to work out afterall. After obsessing over cup brands trying to find a new one, I kept coming back to Lunette’s website; as a PR student, I love the PR work, I love the social media, I love the openness about menstruation and our bodies and of course I love the cup colors! Everything about the brand is so unique and fresh and the Lunette team is interactive with the consumers. So I bought a Lunette!

And oh my goodness has it proved once and for all that menstrual cups are women’s answer to 21st century menstrual care! I’m never talking to girlfriends about pads or tampons again. It’s gonna be all about Lunette from now on and I’m going to spread the word as best as I can! Lunette is amazing! I’d love to win another cup sometime so I can keep it as a model for friends, or give one to a friend!

  • Anonymous

After trying another brand of cup, which shall remain unnamed, I thought it was just my ineptness at learning to use the cup. Now I am learning that not all cups are created equal and that the cup of choice appears to the Lunette. I am looking forward to upgrading!

  • Summer

I am the proud owner of a lunette! Unfortunately, I am also forgetful and was forced to use my bus fare for a “vending machine” tampon last month. I’d love to have two for at home and at work.

  • http://www.facebook.com/hailey.hinson Hailey Hinson

I have never used a cup. I have extremely heavy flows and use cloth pads. I am a college student that is…well on a budget. So to spring the money for the cups are too much. I always he e to choose my health (acupuncture) or cup. I am trying to figure out what cup brand is best for a sensitive body. I have had issues in this area because of a past incident. I need something that will not cause pain and feels comfortable.
    Do you have any ideas?
