Vulvodynia is a syndrome wherein the vestibule, and different areas of the vulva occur sensitivity to touch, burning, and pain. The disorder is common, as much as 15% of women report having sometimes suffered typically vulvodynia pain conditions. The syndrome is still relatively little studied and, for example, the reasons for vulvodynia are not known. The triggering factor is estimated to be, among other things, a bacterial infection, recurrent yeast infections or the use of oral contraceptives.
The most common symptoms are a burning or stabbing pain in the front part of the vagina, the vestibule and the perineum. The areas may be sensitive to touch and burning may occur. Also, redness and swelling are normal, but the itching is not included in the vulvodynia symptoms. The pain can be particularly hard during intercourse and gynecological investigation, and its shape and strength can vary in different stages of the menstrual cycle. The pain may radiate to the lumbar region, thighs, or anus.
Treatment of vulvodynia is challenging. There is yet no care that would suppress the symptons with certainty. However, the symptoms can be alleviated, and even half of the vulvodynic patients achieve long asymptomatic periods without actual treatment or even heal. Access to information on the underlying symptoms of the disease is the basis for the treatment. The symptoms can be alleviated in many different ways. In the pain area, local anesthetic lotion and lubricant can be used to mild cases, reducing dyspareunia. Also, cortisone cream and local creams containing estrogen often soothe vulvar irritation. Cortisone injections can also facilitate Pain. Yeast drugs relieve the symptoms, especially when the pain is suspected due to a sensitized reaction of the yeast fungus. Medicines can be used either locally or taken orally. The course of treatment are often long, but they have good treatment results. Some antidepressants may also help.
Knowing the pelvic floor muscles and their relaxation is important factors in the treatment. The stress of the pelvic floor muscles worsen the symptoms of vulvodynian. The genitals should be washed maximum once a day and even then with plain water only. E-pill user can benefit from a pill break of, for example, half a year.
Some people believe that diet plays a decisive role in treating the symptoms. More on the topic and diet tips can be found here. If all other treatment methods have not eased the symptoms, surgery may be considered. Then the painful skin areas, such as the mucous membrane or skin areas are eliminated.
Causes of the disease are not known
Although vulvodynia is quite common, its cause is unknown. The triggering factor may be a recurring yeast infection, bacterial infection, or use of combined oral contraceptive pill. Vulvodynia is not contagious through the mucous membranes, for example, and it does not expose other gynecological diseases. In fact, vulvodynia is not inherited, but if suspected autoimmune disease is right, it’s hereditary predisposition is great. Other autoimmune diseases are such as psoriasis and arthritis.
