7 Easy product swaps for a more eco-friendly bathroom!

Did you know that while 90% of packaging is recycled in our kitchens, only 50% gets recycled in the bathroom? That means recyclable bathroom waste makes up 30 - 40% of landfill waste in the UK. And it’s not just the waste itself. Most plastics are made from fossil fuels like crude oil, and even recycling them creates emissions. The plastics that aren’t recycled? Many end up in our oceans, threatening marine life.

So what can we do? Start small. Start smart. Start in the bathroom.

Reducing plastic use for Earth Day (and beyond)

As a plastic-free period brand, we already help eliminate up to 11,000 disposable period products per person over a lifetime. But we want to go further and help you do the same. With Earth Day on April 22nd, now’s the perfect time to take action and embrace eco-friendly bathroom swaps that make a real difference.

Here are 7 simple product swaps to help you create a more sustainable bathroom. No guilt, no overwhelm, just progress.

1. Swap disposable period products for a menstrual cup

The average menstruating person uses 286 disposable products per year. That’s a lot of plastic. Switching to a reusable menstrual cup is one of the easiest and most impactful swaps you can make. It’s better for your body, your wallet, and the planet.

2. Ditch disposable razors for a safety razor

Disposable razors may be convenient, but they’re a major contributor to single-use plastic waste. A Bambaw safety razor is a durable, corrosion-resistant alternative that lasts for years - no landfill guilt required.

3. Replace bottled shampoo with a shampoo bar

Shampoo bottles pile up fast and most contain harsh chemicals that strip your hair and disrupt your hormones. Shampoo bars are plastic-free, gentle on your scalp, and packed with nourishing ingredients. Bonus: they last longer and travel better.

4. Trade plastic toothbrushes for bamboo alternatives

Over 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away annually in the US alone - that’s 50 million lbs of waste. A bamboo toothbrush, like those from The Humble Co. is compostable and recyclable. It’s a small swap with a big impact.

5. Switch to natural, plastic-free deodorant

Classic aerosol sprays and plastic roll-ons? Not so eco-friendly. Try natural deodorants made with anodised aluminium or cardboard packaging and plastic-free refills. They’re kinder to your skin and the environment - no pore-blocking, no hormone disruption.

6. Choose reusable nappies over disposables

The average baby uses 4,000 disposable nappies before potty training costing families around £400 a year and producing half a tonne of CO. Reusable nappies are gentler on your baby’s skin, your budget, and the planet.

7. Swap makeup wipes for reusable pads

Makeup wipes are landfill nightmares and flushing them? Even worse. Opt for biodegradable or reusable makeup pads. Just add your favourite remover, toss them in the wash, and reuse. Easy, clean, and zero waste.

This is where hygiene meets living clean

Whether you’re already living sustainably or just starting your journey, your bathroom is a goldmine of opportunities to go plastic-free. These eco-friendly swaps don’t require perfection - just intention. Start with one or two, and build from there.

Small changes. Big impact. A cleaner bathroom and a cleaner planet - one swap at a time.
